4 x 4 x 4

4 x 4 x 4 is the working title of an on-going photographic project, which began in 2019. It’s very possible that I have created all the images that I need to make me feel that this project is complete. However, due to the Pandemic, and my having to take on a full-time job, I have had little time to bring this to a completed form, which I intend to be a book. As of May 2024 I will have more time to dedicate to this purpose, and will be taking a deep dive into the content of all the notebooks that I have written in, related to this project. I have already made my first book dummy layout, but will play around and progress that area too.

The project in it’s holistic form saw me travel from my North London base in 4 directions: north, east, south and west, at 4 distances: 5, 10, 20 and 40 miles, by 4 modes of transport: Cycling, Walking, Train, or Bus. Each place has been crudely plotted on a map, and the total number of locations is sixteen. It is not intended to visit every place by every mode of transport, but it is expected that many locations will be visited at least twice.

The hope for the project is to open a dialogue about our lives, set in the context of location. The images I have made are suggestive of the world we live in; taking in the micro and the macro, the often overlooked. There is nothing remarkable about these scenes, but is there anything remarkable about our lives from day-to-day? As a life-long observer I enjoy the practice of wandering, whilst taking in my surroundings, aware of my senses. Through fleeting scenes I may find joy, humour, surprise and more. I hope I can offer a visual journey for others through this work, but only time will tell.
